Matacus Contest #11 - Oil Well till Oct 20th, 07 20:00 GMT

Postby wolterw » Mon Oct 08, 2007 5:16 pm

Hello and welcome to the Matacus Design Contest #11 - Oil Well
Objective is to build an Oil Well or Sucker Rod Pump similar to those used by the oil industry to pump oil out of the ground --> http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imagem:Oil_well_scheme.svg
http://web.mit.edu/2.972/www/reports/su ... _pump.html
The main difference of this project is that instead of oil you are going to suck Dillo, sorry for the expression, out of the ground.

The rules are:
- The equipment doesn't have to be identical to the ones shown in the articles above. Mechanical design variations that better suits your needs are accepted.
- The engine that drives the beam up and down should be a piston rotating motor, possibly using a rocket as power source although a dark power source will also be accepted.
- Dillo should be placed in the oil pipe, at least 2 bar lenghts from the ground surface.
- Once operating, the equipment should be able to bring Dillo up to the ground surface.

That is it. Ask if something is unclear.

Submissions can be send to wolter@uninet.com.br

Hope you all become millioneers from this new activity!

How are we meant to suck the dillo out, as there is no such thing in AR as air...

You suck Dillo out by lifting it mechanically using the upward motion of the lever.

LOL! still pretty funny though :)

As far as the piston goes, theres plenty of levels laying around with a piston type mechanism in them, so finding a good one shouldn't be hard.

One question though, can we place dillo inside something? such as a box or cage?

I have an idea that could work, but I don't want to give it away.

To pull or push Dillo out of the pipe you may build a box or cage. However, be aware that Dillo, in reaching the ground surface, is conquering its freedom. He should feel free to walk around without any physic constraints.

could be doable with timers if it's long enough.

hmm, is there anything about the pipe needing to be vertical? I know it doesn't say that in the rules, but I'm just wondering.

I can't figure out how to do it vertically just using piston type engines (I know of ways to do it that don't use piston engines). Although I have a few ideas to do it in a sort of combination.

There are no restrictions to what you can do. Try to build something that , as much as possible, resembles what was specified for this contest. At the end your work will be appreciated by the voters. They will define if what you accomplished is a masterpiece or something else.

'k thanks :)

I did complete the goal that I needed. Now I just need to think of ways to add some scenery to the level. I have already added some stuff before I finished the mechanism though.

BTW scenery doesn't neccesarily mean trees and whatever.
