We have been discussing having a design contest and now I think it is time for a first try in this direction.

That's why I now announce

The Matacus Design Contest #1

Rules:
Very simple, this time the levels should be as mechanically ingenious as possible. I'm thinking of triggers, engines, devices, etc. Examples of such levels are:

Rube Goldberg's Revenge
UnpossibleMission
Clepsydra

The levels do not have to be as big as Clepsydra, of course. Try to avoid timers since it could be considered more technical to use some kind of construction instead.

Only make spectator levels this time.

Use this name scheme for your levels: Matacus_I-[LevelName]-[YourForumName]
Example: Matacus_I-JawsOfSteel-snowlord

Send your submissions to matacus@internetlab.org before Thursday September 14th, 21:00 GMT.

The winner will be decided by voting. Either by making a poll in this forum or by sending your votes by mail. The question will be: "Which level is most mechanically ingenious?". More on this later.

If there is interest in this kind of competition, the next round will be hosted by the winner of this one (I want to compete too!).

Good luck!

(OK, how much was understandable of that?)

EDIT: Corrected the date in the subject. It's September now and nothing else! I hope this causes no trouble...

Everything, except what is Matacus?

I could refer you to Google, as it happens to give the answer in the first result, but since I obviously wanted this question I'll answer it:

It's the species descriptor of one of the only two types of Armadillo that can roll itself into a ball, the Southern Three-banded Armadillo, Tolypeutes matacus.

(I wanted a name for the contest, googled a little and thought Matacus a good name :) )

Just posting some more examples - there aren't many levels involving triggers:

Recycling (Pretty crazy, this one...)
Force Clockwork (I think this one started off the whole "mechanisms in levels", it was pretty much certainly the first display of the force.)
elevate (See also the topic).

There aren't many mechanism-levels at all. Looking forward to the results of this one!

Hmm, do you mean the first display of the force in mechanism levels, or the first display, period. If the former, that may be true (though I don't think so), but the latter is most certainly not true. Force clockwork was uploaded on the 14th of July. BFC already used the force in a solution for the first contest, the results of which were released on the 12th of June!

I meant the first display of force in an actual level, not in a solution. Force in solutions did indeed come a lot sooner :P.

Although, now that I check, Casius-Pistons predates it. Force Clockwork was either more publicised, or just the first spectator level which means I'm more likely to remember it.

Or spectator levels go through the checking-to-be-on-the-site quicker than normal levels. Probably not, so my memory's off.

So, first display of force in a spectator level being force clockwork :P?

Is it OK to make spectatorlvls as a levlel set? I have allready made a couple with that in mind :> But they can of course be evaluated seperately anyway :P

edit - forget about it - it gets too complicated with the naming stuff :P

For simplicity, let's see them as separate levels. Otherwise there would have to be special instructions for the level sets.

I guess another round of this competition could be about creating level sets.

I'm looking forward to see your set, though!

The problem with this type opf competition, is we can't compare scores while it's running!

I guess people just need to start bragging about how cool their ideas are :D
