The one on the left does use metal bars holding each other up in some odd way. The two pieces are just touching each other - they aren't connected or overlapping. This is a technique known as 'resting on', and is different from welding, because the pieces aren't 'stuck' together

The key aspect of welding is that the two pieces being 'welded' together actually have to cross over each other, or intersect. in the picture on the right, the rubber in the middle is being held up by the node at the bottom, and in turn it's endpoints are holding the end rubber bit in place.

Both of these techniques rely on the fact that endpoints of materials can't pass through other materials (in the same 'plane')

I'm so close to completeing number three. I'll continue on it tomorrow. (it's 10:25 now at Louisiana, USA. I don't know what time it is at Europe).

Welding is AOK - although it is a pretty odd bug, I agree. It's a case of whether it spoils or enhances the gameplay, and I think welding is a good trick to have for 'advanced players'.

I thought I was awesome getting over 10k but Peter beat me to it!

Solutions are beginning to roll in and I am seeing some new ideas. I am glad this format is working out . More than using restricted materials, I think three different challenges added together makes for a broader test of skill.

I agree, although I think in this particular competition the emphasis is much more on the third level - for eg, finding a way to do without 1 piece of rubber nets you $100, whereas getting rid of a metal bar in level 2 gives you only $10.

I am almost certain that the winner will be the person with the cheapest level 3 - the other two levels are just tie-breakers.

Yeah, it would be better with altered material costs.

OMG iam so outa my depth i cant even do the first one !!!

I have a problem...I'm changing my internet connection and tomorrow it cuts for about 10 days...
So I can't participate to this contest and that's a pity really, I've got the 10K+!
When PeterT said he did it, I tweaked to hell to reach it myself...
At the same time I really want to show Orjan I'm not bluffing, so... what can I do?

Ive decided that I really dont like rubber as a structural element, my scores way off the pace still cause I cant sort out level 3.
