AR Forum Contest #1 (10/06/06 - 12/06/06)

Now that the forum has over 60 members I think it's time to try a small contest.

These are the rules:
  • The time limit is exactly 48 hours from when I post the level here.
  • Cheapest solution wins, no other criteria. The first level is "Void" type to forestall any "cheating" discussions.
  • Posting anything (except very general comments) related to the current contest level is prohibited during the 48 hour contest period. (see below for clarification on posting scores)
  • Your solution can be submitted to the contest's host (me, for now) at any time during the 48 hour period.

The winner will recieve a new forum rank which comes with a small medal below the name. Not that great I guess but better than nothing ;)
Probably, the winner will also be asked to design the next contest level and host the next contest.

I will post the level here at 16:00 GMT+1. (Ie. about half an hour from now)

I hope that many of you will participate :armadillo:

So, without further ado, here it is:
AR Forum Contest Level 1 - "Wide"

The level is quite small and offers many possibilities, so try it. And please submit your solution even if you don't think you will win, you never know what might happen ;)

The contest will officially end on 12/06/06 at 16:05 EST (GMT+1).

Are we allowed to post our current personal best score? If we know how cheap others are doing it for it will spur us on to eek e few extra dollars out of our own solutions :) I seem to remember them doing that on the Eurogamer thread that inspired this one, and it led to a very healthy competition.

This is a hard question, as, on the one hand it is as you say, and posting scores may spur people on to make even better solutions. But, on the other hand, it may discourage many from even trying and/or submitting their solution.

But, let's try it like this: You are allowed to post your current score, however there is one twist - you are even allowed to bluff, that is, post higher or lower than your current best! That should introduce a level of unpredictability while still allowing some communication :D

In that case, I'll start the bidding at $2324 remaining ;)

It's an interesting level Peter, I'm sure they'll be quite a few different solutions here.

Thanks! That was my hope when I made it.

Just a clarification for me: We only get one submission? So if I submit and then manage to best my score, too bad?

Great level Peter :)

I have recently created a level similar to this but much larger and involved that I called "Breakthrough".

I'll give this one a go!

I'm at $2430, which I figure is the best I can do with my current structure. We'll see what else I come up with.

<nudges the bar a bit>

Into the 2600's over here :)

I like the left/right challenge!

After a complete rethink I'm now up at $2662. Extra marks for a palindrome?

No, you can submit as many as you like, as long as it's in the 48 hour period. Submit here: peter@metaclassofnil.com
