Challenge: A fountain

Postby beejamin » Mon Feb 12, 2007 7:29 am

Hello!

For a while now I've been tinkering with the idea of building a 'fountain' in AR - essentially a system which will fling little particles (usually short rubber or cloth pieces) into the air.

My little fantasy involves building something that can fling enough particles, consistently enough, to float the 'dillo on top of the stream (you know in cartoons, where someone gets flung up on top of a whale's spout?)

So far nothing I've built has even come close... I can build wheels and hoppers to fling particles and catch and recycle them, but at nowhere near the frequency required to hold anything up.

So - if you feel like a challenge, have a crack at this! I'll post my best effort soon!

Hello Beejamin & guys,
the AR Fountain is very interesting idea IMO! :D

I've tried to create something fountaning. I used a classic Geron's scheme and a lot of little rubber pieces. Unfortunately, the game engine can't manage their movement correctly, so this way is useless. :?

It's very interesting what you've got 8)

I've put 'dilo into the fountain stream so there was a little floating effect :) But the rubber is too heavy, so it's hard to spring it out

Nice work Nicky! I'd never considered using the weight of the particles themselves to provide the pressure to push them - I'd always been using a 'pump' made out of two grippy wheels to provide the upwards acceleration.

The most promising system I have is a pump like this, with a 'trampoline' effect rubber underneath to feed the particles into the pump. However, the trampoline can't handle many particles at once, and the wheels are pretty fragile once they reach working speed.

Your hopper/cylinder is great - I wonder if I can use it to feed my pump? Hmmm....

great stuff!

That's very nice Beejamin! :D
This idea is very cool indeed 8)

I've tried to make something using this scheme. I used rubber wheels, not gears

Cool stuff. I think that to do better on the original idea fully you would need different materials and different methods of "pumping"particles upwards.

:D I just thought of something - How about someone hack the armadillo to make him small and lightweight?
