IMPORTANT: metaclassofnil.com will have to move :(

Postby PeterT » Fri Jul 20, 2007 2:00 pm

My host (myhosting.de) will close down at the end of the year, so I'll have to move this forum (and everything else hosted on metaclassofnil.com) elsewhere.

This is very problematic, as for example the medals are implemented via a custom ruby script started by a cron job. I don't know any other cheap hosting providers that allow such options. I also use tons of subdomains (ie. armadillo.metaclassofnil.com) and those aren't always free.

Please post here if you have any good suggestions for a hosting provider.

Just for perspective, currently I'm paying ?10 per month for metaclassofnil.com.

So it doesn't have to be free at all, it just has to support all of the features needed.

Wow thats a bummer... I dont really know much about domains, but good luck in finding one!!

Edit: Ur paying $10 a month out of the goodness of your heart?? Do you make any money at all, or do you just pay for our enjoyment!
In an ideal world, where anything and everything is in perfect form, is there a perfect form of imperfection?

Work THAT one out! :)

More like $14 ;) -- and no, I don't make any money off this.

I found a suitable provider, it's even slightly cheaper. This development is not nearly as bad as I thought at first, fully-featured hosting has become much easier to find than it was 3 years ago. I'll keep you posted when I begin the move, there are still a few months left though.

https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/services/hosting.php

According to a web developer I know, you can get hosting for 30$ a year with a coupon from dreamhost.com. And it's 150gb of storage, 1.5 tb bandwith, plus mysql/email/php/etc

Although I was just talking to him and he said he'd be willing to host it for free. He has a few medals under the name 'Trevis'. PM me to get his AIM contact or email if you're interested.

Negative, ROUTHost is what you want, it's cheap, but good and reliable, the customer service is super fast, free unlimited subdomains, cron jobs, php, mysql, etc, more on the page.

35 bucks a year for bronze IIRC.

Probably, though I may use the move to upgrade to phpBB 3, which has some pretty cool new features.

They would support everything I need, including Ruby scripting and cronjobs. Now where would I get that fabled coupon?

It's really cheap, but does not offer Ruby support.

Maybe, it is possible to use something different instead of Ruby? I heard about using Java Servlets for such cron jobs - to run them on requested time.

The promotion code you want to use is: MDDR

That should make the "Crazy Domain Insane" (wtf?) package go down to $29.40 if you sign up for one year with free setup
