Hoverball?

Postby Mathias-san » Fri Oct 13, 2006 7:48 pm

Ok I was just toying around and this suddenly happened..
Anyone know why it flys?
And can anyone tweak it so that it flys upwards and not just falls to the side?
If I'm the first to discover it, let's call it hoverball and it's a part of the boborubber effect :D

Okay, attempt at explanation: it's a bug :P.

From http://armadillo.metaclassofnil.com/for ... .php?t=156:

peterstock wrote:3 - Similarly to 2, when the armadillo is colliding with something, but there isn't space to resolve the collision (it's being squashed), it can revolve - creating movement with no source of energy.

So, it's that bug (I think) Normal uses of the bug have been to surround the 'dillo with rubber or cloth, then tension it. As in the editor you can place the armadillo inside constructions already, you get the compression already. As the armadillo is being compressed at the top, it moves up, I suppose. To have no right/left movement, it would have to be perfectly balanced.

You can adjust the tension levels to make it veer, as long as it doesn't break. If it spins long enough fast enough, it'll break.

Edit: read the post before this... it's much better..

Ok.. I have figured out how it works:
The tension in the rubber doesn't get all pushed out, because of the ball being in the way, because of that it pushes the ball upwards which then pushes up the upper rubber part which moves the whole construction

It actually works fine without tension too.

OH MY GOD

I have dreamed of this day. Mathias, you are my new Hero.

The 'bobo rubber effect' is a terrible name though. I think we'll stick with hoverball :D

OK, a litle unstable - but has anyone tried with two or more armadillos attached to the same dark UFO? Mad-Mathias-ball down the hall!
