AR2 A 201 Slider ('til 10th Sept @ 16h00 GMT)

Postby bythelee » Wed Sep 05, 2012 5:24 pm

Welcome to the 201st AR2 A contest: Slider

After the total non-event that was Grinder, this is the challenge that I had originally wanted to post.
After some careful experimentation with spacings, angles, etc, I discovered during my one last test prior to posting that the problem was virtually self-solving. The dillo container dynamics meant it passed through the first "gate" with no user intervention whatsoever.

That's not a problem anymore. Now, it's a real b******d.
A POC has never taken me so long........

As such, I'm in no doubt this is a 5 day exercise.
But I'm sure there are many ways to get around the problems posed in Slider.

Above all, have fun! I hope you all enjoy a different take on the "escape" challenge. :)

(PS: I am now spending extended and variable periods away from my usual internet connection. I expect to have only intermittent connectivity for the foreseeable future, so I apologise in advance if results are delayed when the time comes.)

Indeed it is. (easier than anticipated).

The purpose of Slider was to make it difficult to feed the container through the gaps in the various slides. That challenge is NOT easy. Like I said, the POC took me longer than any other.

And it would have been a different sort of escape puzzle, because you're not working with a round dillo anymore, and small gaps that the structure won't just drop through.

In the aborted posting from last Saturday, I had included a rule about subtracting $500 if the dillo container was broken. Intending to "disqualify" the breakage that I know you guys are all so good at.
But I forgot all about it in the height of the disappointment while posting it after the Grinder debacle. In spite of the reworked, more difficult problem, $500 would still be an adequate penalty to make the simple breakage option a non-winning choice (ie it can be solved for better than $1500).

So from one catastrophe to the next......
Sorry guys.

Can't change the rules now, so we're stuck with a stupidly easy level, and no more than a Heath Robinson award for anyone that tries to complete the level without breaking any components of the triangular box.
If you're bored, I suggest having a go. Anyone that thought the Grinder finish was difficult, brace yourself for gap 3.........

We can terminate this one early if everyone's happy with their entries so far. I suggest 8th Sept @ 16h00. (That's Saturday - tomorrow as at time of posting)

It was pretty clear how it was supposed to be solved, but there were no rules against breakage so we just went for that option.
I think you can redo this level some other time with the no breakage rule in place... it seems like an interesting challenge.
I'd have a go but I don't really have time right now.

In any case, 1840+

Oh and yes, I'm happy for this to finish early as I think we've squeezed all we can out of our solution...

Oops! I did not consider a special rule. So my bet is not valid.
