A very close contest, and all good solutions to look at!
Thank you for indulging my love of bridges. ;)

:lms: The winner is Paolof, with a score of 918! Congratulations! :lms:

I had a go at this for training purposes, since I'm also keen on bridges.

First blind try came out at 912, and then discovered that some ropes were so long it was cheaper to use steel bars.
Add a more economical portal stop, and I ended up at 922.

Knowing what winning score to beat may have helped, but I didn't peek at the other entries until done.
While it's similar in fundamental concept to the official entries, it is a little different in execution, using an "infinite lever" near the centre to save needing a bracing bar.
This does result in being very close to failure, which hampered tweaking.

Touche, Votart! Thanks for the idea. :) I was having a lot of trouble getting the last dillo into the portal. (Note to self: must remember that for next time...)

On another note, I began a bit of a different concept. More of a suspension bridge like Sydney Harbour. It fails as uploaded here, but isn't far off.
I upload it for it's "novelty", being different to all of the other entries, although I confess to learning the concept from other challenge solutions.
I decided it was too expensive to consider (it seems to use a lot of bars), but with the score at 950+, maybe not!
I'm sure it can be made to work, perhaps by increasing the left hand span to reduce the tension at the failing joint.....

Sydney Harbour bridge lives :D

The right hand span is now so short that the inverse suspension system isn't worth it.

It bends alarmingly, but seems quite safe from failure. And very easy to add short rope in all the right places.

And, strangely, it actually looks like an elegant bridge now.

Over to you guys for the tweaks (if you can find any more) , but at 944 it's already well ahead of all the other solutions!
EDIT: OK, so I found one tweak to save $2..... but it's not as pretty!

Oh dear. It was rather easy to cut costs on Sydney Harbour bridge.
Just delete a couple of support ropes. They were "needed", but the dillo's cope very happily without them! Nothing else was tweaked and it still solves....

964..... ..... Any more, anyone?
EDIT: Doh! I missed a subtle detail in Votart's tweak, so... yeah. 972. This is getting ridiculous.

Why do I think this is going to forever change bridge building in challenges?
