No, I don't think that's a problem. Welding is actually a useful and fun tool for light solutions as long as it's not creating stupid force.
I'm sure AR2 is going to have some "unrealistic" physics still, like materials moving through each other as you suggest, but that's not a bad thing really. Finding little tricks like that will add fun. It's only a problem when dark force is produced.
It's almost guaranteed that in time we will discover new "cheats" and ways to abuse the engine, but we will have to cross that bridge when we come to it.
Half the fun of AR1 was learning to abuse the engine, but we simply got too good at it. It got to a point where every solution used the same mechanics over and over again. No doubt we will reach that same scenario in the future with AR2, but being able to change the price of materials will help us to keep things interesting for longer. I know I'm looking forward to experimenting with elastic if it's priced more reasonably so it's finally useful in a solution.
