First of all, welcome to the forum and thanks for making this thread!
I'm really happy that someone else posted a thread here, but you're slightly out of date. Someone named "Mason" posted a $362 version on the official site on May 28th ;)

I know this because I found it when I wanted to post my own $358 solution.
And that's why we need this forum!

Anyway, Mason's version is very interesting, I did not believe it would work with just 2 ropes.

[edit]Wow, yours is also 2 ropes, so I guess Mason just added that nice catching contraption... that gives me an idea

I just tweaked Mason's mechanism slightly, it's now $372:

That method is really quite ingenious. I believe it could be useful in other levels as well.

[edit]
Now I used my improved version of this mechanism in combination with the rope fastening by MsieurJu, for a $376 result. I think this is pretty close to the optimum now.

Amazing. I was using the ropes before, but I would have never guessed to setup the catch at the end in such a way. Very smart in using the ends of the steel bars.

And THAT is why I like this game so much. Just when you're SURE you have it licked, someone beats you! Tweak tweak tweak.

I get 372, using rope and that crazy mechanism.. how is it possible to save an extra 4$ since you cannot move the cloth any closer together ~_~
